It's a deliberately eccentric housewares chain, rather like Crate & Barrel, Ikea, or BB&B. The only real difference is the flavor or tone of the housewares on offer. At Ikea you'll find a thousand sterile designs made of particleboard. At Pier 1, everything tries to feel exotic. Like something you'd find in a romantic rummage sale held by 19th century sea captains. It's largely the same mass-manufactured junk, of course.
