“This one is tricky. On one hand you have the hardcore fans of the series that'll find so much to complain about. On the other hand you have the people who are completely oblivious to it. Personally I'm somewhere in the middle.
You see I wanted to dress as Kirk this past Halloween. I figured I needed to know his personality among other things. So I bought TOS. I was hooked. It has everything a Sci Fi fan could ever want. Of course you have understand it was all made in the 60's so the special effects are not that special. And of course just the fact that it was filmed in the 60's ensures that some of the dialogue could potentially offend people.
Now, since I really hadn't had time to 'bond' with TOS. I guess that still kind of left me raw. In a sense that I never really had time to cement my feelings about it. So when I realized that they released a new movie I had to see it. I think the back story is necessary so you can understand why I feel the way I feel about this movie.
As for this movie. I Loved it! I've watched it like 7 times. I have it on my phone. I replied to a question about this movie earlier. The question was how does the movie compare to TOS. I believe it compares very well. Now it's hard to give exact reasons since doing so will ruin plotlines. I will say that biggest gripe has to do with the way they introduce characters. They practically call eachother by name every time. It gets annoying fast. Most videogame movies do this as well. What bothers me is that instead of saying, "What are you doing?". They'll say "Kirk, What are you doing?". I know it sounds nit picky. But that bothers me.
The movie has a ton of action, the effects give you goose bumps at times. And I really like how you care about the characters. I don't mean hardcore Trek fans type of care. I mean most people who watch this as a Sci Fi movie first rather than a Trek film and are willing to pay attention will feel some loss over the course of the film. It will give you a hell of a ride and leave you wanting more. I for one can't wait for the next update. Enjoy!”
“Smart of the producers to update the Star Trek franchise by adding a prequel (somewhat) to the original series.
Funny, suspenseful, and visually stunning; that's all I have to say because I think Star Trek speaks for itself. Perhaps it's because I'm somewhat of a Trekkie, but I'm pretty sure evil overlords, big destructive weapons, spaceships, and plot twists appeal to more than just Trekkies.”
“Damn good! Fresh _and_ faithful...not easy to do, especially with _this_ genre.”
“Before I had seen this movie, I was very skeptical of a "new" Star Trek with the same characters, different actors before their stories began. I've been a Star Trek fan since I was a kid. TNG was my Star Trek, and my Mom loved old school. But I loved this movie, they made a gateway to an alternate series of movies. Really, they have re-written the entire saga, and did so in a way that wasn't hokey or anything. A great way to introduce the series to a younger generation of neo-trekkies. And I loved the performances of every actor, they were true to the characters and I adored them more than ever. I have watched this movie over and over now, really, why haven't I bought it yet to own?”
“They've made Star Trek cool again :-)”
“JJ Abrams is a GENIUS. That is all.”
“Great movie, great price, everything!”
“i really liked this movie and I never really liked the show but that was when i was little if i watched it now i'd probably like it”
“didnt get to see it in the movies but its ok”
“I've seen every one of them... All series, all movies and the story just keeps getting better and better. Or should I say the history of the story?”
“Awesome movie. Even if your not a Treck geek you will like this movie.”
“I had never seen any of the Star Treks before in my life, (movies, TV series, etc...). My boyfriend made me watch it and I loved it! I was crying in my seat after the first scene lol. Chris Pine is super sexy and I love Zachary Quinto from Heros (he played Sylar). The flick is funny, action packed, has a cool plot, plus the acting isn't bad. I would definitely recommend.”
“Good. Hope they made either another or turn it in to a WELL DONE series with this level of quality. Worked for Stargate. Should work here. Especially with the level of Trek fans that have said they liked this film.”
“Revamped for the 21st century with awesome special effects and a decent cast. Worth seeing”
“When Star Trek(2009) came out, I was skeptical - considering they were taking one of my favorite t.v. shows as a child and turning it into a movie. But J.J. Abrams and the whole production team delivered, producing this cinematic beauty of a film. The characters are the same as they've always been, with a visit from Leonard Nemoy himself, but the plot has been twisted to make it something more spectacular. Just.Watch.The.Movie.”
“A great take on the original shows and films. JJ Abrahms, that's all I have to say.”
