The Big Lebowski Reviews
What is “The Big Lebowski”?
The Coen Brothers' signature cult classic, The Big Lebowski, is a movie of nuance where every nuance leads to a tangent of questionable relevance.
Take a Raymond Chandler novel, and replace Philip Marlowe with a aging hippie just addled enough to roll with the punches when he finds himself far out of his element. The story starts with mistaken identity and destruction of private property, winds itself into knots of crime, deception, and depravity, and ends in death and rebirth. Through all of it, all the Dude wants is his rug back.
The movie has spawned an annual convention and bowling competition known as Lebowski Fest. Part of the movie's lasting appeal to some, and unending bafflement to others, is that the plot can take several viewings before it makes sense even on a basic level. Also of note is the dialogue, which seems specifically tailored for quotation.
