“God, I remember how worried people were about this before it came out. The NAACP was involved, they changed the main character's name from something that sounded "Mammy-ish" to the more urban-sounding "Tiana," the animals were too stereotypical or something -- it was a circus. I was in the "Why can't she just be like every other princess/who gives a crap about the NAACP?!" camp, but I was happy with the result. Disney really could have dug itself a hole, here, but it's pretty, the music is great, and the story is funny/cute. It's always a difficult line to toe -- "true to reality" types of narratives can very easily venture into "blatant stereotyping" territory (and Disney certainly wasn't pitch-perfect in that respect, either) -- but it did its job. Unfortunately, it didn't really establish itself as a classic, but that may be partially due to the dominance of Pixar and 3d technology and etc etc rather than sheer content issues. Anyway, I liked it!”
