One of my absolute favorite movies ever.

One of the more interesting aspects, for city lovers, is that it was filmed on-location in Boston. This never happens -- or rarely enough as to be never -- as the Boston unions ask so much money, and unlike New York filmmakers don't receive a kickback for shooting in the area. Here, though, you get a real Boston flavor in every shot. If you know the city fairly well, you can recognize every location and you'll know that the chose them well.

Sometimes the geography is a little odd, I'll grant you; characters seem to teleport miles across town while sucking down a short cup of coffee. Still, great atmosphere.

Damon and Affleck: Riding on the success of Good Will Hunting since 1997. But maybe in Damon's defense, it's more like Affleck is still clinging to the crested wave of that success.

I think Damon has made a half-decent argument for himself. He's gotten old enough that he's no longer skating on that young pretty-boy thing, and he's racked up enough roles -- both serious ones and big-budget starring ones -- that it's easy to take him seriously as an actor. Affleck, though... I can't imagine not wanting to slap the man.

Okay. I'd like to confess something: I've never seen this movie before this week. Which is weird, because I feel like I've seen it before. Mostly because people tend to bring it up or quote from it in those roaming, flimsy sorts of conversations about pop culture, and I always do that thing where I laugh or nod accordingly like I've seen it a billion times like a good AFI Top 100 disciple when I really haven't so I don't look like the uncultured chronic reality-tv-show-watching sack of lard I am, to the extent that I've pieced together the film's narrative without ever once checking wikipedia. Smart, right? Anyyyyway, um, it's amazing? The script is tighter than almost anything ever, and, er, beautifully shot, and...I could laud it 'til the cows come home but you've all already seen it, haven't you? Um. So, Matt Damon...that guy turned out to be pretty talented, yeah? Yiiiikes. Ok. Time to rent Godfather. Let you guys know when that titillating review comes out.”
