“Awesome app! Finds local resturaunts, and whatever else you need.”
“Looking for an iPhone application that will help you make the most of your neighborhood, wherever you happen to be? Then AroundMe could be just the app for you. It's a little like a GPS, only much, much better.
I have a confession. I was very late to the whole "iPhone revolution." I happen to be something of a Luddite when it comes to new technology as a whole. Not that I have a disdain for new technology or more specifically smart phones, per se. I just have an extreme apprehension against being a Beta tester for a company’s newest widget. And as a thirty-something, I have lived through my share of gadgets and doohickeys that eventually collapsed beneath the weight of their own hype. Remember laserdiscs? They make great coasters.
But that was all before I got an iPhone and everything changed. Nowadays you’d have to pry this thing out of my cold, dead hands. But just like any tool, it only matters how you use it. That’s where my latest review comes into play. I'm talking about the AroundMe app. If you have not downloaded this app, then STOP READING and do it right now. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
Is everyone back yet? Excellent. Now I know what you’re thinking. Where’s the pretty interfaces? Where’s the bells and whistles DJ? Patience, Grasshopper; all things will be revealed. AroundMe is essentially an intuitive GPS app which allows users to search their immediate vicinity for businesses and services such as banks/ATMs, gas stations, hospitals, hotels, even bars or nightclubs.
The aforementioned are some of the "preset" alphabetized options on the main screen. However, just to add another feather in the cap of awesomeness that is AroundMe, it also boasts a feature that allows you to search for services/businesses that are not listed, and even lets you save the search in case you need to go back to it. Searches can be performed with zip codes, city names or even the name of your neighborhood.
For all you Google-heads out there, listen up. Those of you that just love to know every tidbit of info about a place before you leave your front door, AroundMe also allows you to simply double-tap on the name of the business. This will pop up a spiffy little map, displaying the address and contact info (if available) of the establishment.
Tapping the arrow brings up a pre-filled menu of that business' or service’s contact info, including name, address and phone number. If it’s a business for which you may want to save the info, then you can even create a phone contact directly from the app.
Users can also get directions to your final destination in whichever mode of transportation you prefer: bus, public transport or on foot. In my opinion, AroundMe does to Googling what Googling did to the Yellow Pages. (Any of you out there that does not know what I’m talking about, just ask your older brother or sister).
As a recent transplant to the City of Angels from the east coast, I have found this app to be an invaluable addition to my app roster. In fact, I found myself shuffling other standard apps off of my home screen just to make room for it.
Now for the caveats. As wonderful as I think this app is, it’s not an oracle or an almanac. Don’t be slacked-jawed if it takes more time -- and in certain cases, a lot more time -- to reach your destination than the app indicates.”
