The Office Reviews

What is “The Office”?

A mockumentary about a paper company called Dunder Mifflin. The show follows manager Michael Scott as he struggles to balance his need to be liked with his job to be an authority figure in the office. The employees try to entertain themselves as best they can, and often butt heads about work ethic and personal space--all the small things that seem important in a stifling office environment. The main "straight man" is Jim, who spends most of his time flirting with Pam and pranking Dwight, the resident eccentric. The other employees make appearances, and vary in level of eccentricity. The humor tends to be understated and situational.

An adaptation of the original UK Office, which ran for just 14 episodes (as opposed to the 140+ of the US series). Although the first season of the US show is a close mirror to its parent, with its second season the show branches off into original territory and finds its own unique comedic center.

“if you happen to be so fortunate (is that sarcasm i detect?) to work in corporate america, you will definitely find this show H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S! If not, no worries! Mr. 40-year-old-virgin himself will keep you smiling ear to ear regardless of your profession. But make no mistake, this is no one-man band. Mr. Virgin is surrounded by a cast of insanely witty, awkward characters. So if you haven't seen an episode yet, go do so NOW! why? Cuz that's what I said!”

“This was so cute! I love Michael and Holly together, so an episode pointing out how similar they are is right up my alley. Side note: has anyone else noticed that they've started amping up Erin's character? She gets more and more outrageous as time goes on and I'm really starting to like her. :)”

“This show is getting a little bit better this season, but that's like saying your head cold has cleared but your 23 knife wounds to the face are still fatal. The fact that I can barely remember enough of this to write a review, nor do I care to go back and rewatch it for said reviewing purposes, to me speaks volumes.

There are still funny moments on this show (Creed describing the Lochness monster a few eps back had me in tears), but I think at this point they have lost sight of most of the characters. Michael's personality is now always dictated by what kind of comedy the show is striving for. The character just feels too wildly inconsistent, more of a device than a human. I liked the little moments early on when he would be surprisingly good at his job, or compassionate, or intelligent, but it felt natural and 3dimensional then and importantly, it was EARNED.

I could go on, but it's the same junk everyone else has pointed out. Pam and Jim have become unbearable and I commend the writers for not only picking up on it, but bringing it front and center. I know Carell is leaving and I want to see this to the end, but watching the newest episode of the Office used to be something I looked forward to. Now, I feel like it's a chore. The show has run it's course, I certainly hope they don't try to keep it alive too long after Carell leaves if they can't freshen it up.

On a positive note, while I think the Michael and Holly thing get's a tad ridiculous I like them and, even if it sounds stupid, I simply care enough about these characters that I want them to be happy.”

“Just caught up on The Office. I liked all the episodes pretty much--OMG THE JIM AND DWIGHT SNOWBALL FIGHT WAS INCREDIBLE--but I'm so impatient that I want the Holly/Michael plotline to start up, haha. We know it's going to happen, Office writers, just get it done!”

“I must admit Im more inclined to watch the American version of this show, and didnt give the original the time of day until recently. Its got all the same components of the American version, just with some British humor. Ricky Gervais is quite talented. I like it, definently worth a watch if you like the off the wall and inappropriate humor.”
