What is “Futurama”?

Simpsons creator Matt Groening's "other" show has attracted less success yet possibly more fervent ardor than its sibling.

On New Year's Eve 1999, pizza deliveryman Fry (voice of Billy West) trips into a cryogenic freezing chamber. The next thing he knows, it's the year 3000 and everything is exactly the way he remembers it -- if you ignore all the robots and flying cars and demented humanoid lobsters. Otherwise, New York is still New York and Fry is still a loser. At least in the future he's a loser with friends. Sure they're all mutants, aliens, robots, and weirdos -- but hey, he'll take what he can get.

Futurama began with a flourish in 1999, lasted four seasons, then was canned due to bizarre scheduling and low ratings. Also, Fox. Five years and four direct-to-DVD movies later, the show returned to air with new episodes on Comedy Central.

“Another great season of this show. Favorite quote thus far: "Look at me! Proud dad of a super hero! We should print up T-shirts. And F-shirts for our friends with two arms on the same side."”

“With the show's recent revival, my wife and I have gone back to the start to pore over the series in order. She had never seen Futurama, and I had barely seen it in eight years, so it seemed a good idea.

I remember that Fox used to program a block on Sundays: Futurama, followed by the Simpsons, followed by the X-Files. More often than not, although I told myself I was there for The X-Files I wound up most impressed with Futurama. The problem was that Fox kept bumping the show because of sports. I never knew if it would be on or not, and when it was on it was usually a rerun of one of the same two or three episodes. Then the X-Files started to wear on me (after having gone seven seasons without missing a single episode), and I had other things to do, so I basically forgot about Futurama. When they started to make noise about the direct-to-DVD revival movies, I was surprised as I didn't even know the show had been canceled.

Well, sometimes things work out in the end. The revived show is exactly the same as it ever was, as evidenced by our rewind telethon.

I'm impressed with how the show establishes itself over the course of three or four episodes, trickling in major characters and scenarios. The show has much more of a focus on story and overt satire than its sister show, turning it into a sort of comedic adventure series. Whereas The Simpsons sort of leans back on its satire, lacing it through sitcom situations while we focus on the character dynamics, Futurama uses its sci-fi premise the way that sci-fi was made to be used.

The characters, although interesting in their own right, tend to be overshadowed by the sheer weight of the scenario. The result is a somewhat headier humor. The baseline for every episode is some kind of satire -- often about sci-fi conventions, often about cultural conventions -- and then the scripts ladle quips, references, and fleeting satire on top of that. It's all good-natured and fairly observant; it's just a bit cerebral compared with The Simpsons. Which is exactly the way I like it.

Both the humor and tone here strongly remind me of Mystery Science Theater 3000, particularly the last (and, to my mind, best) few years of the show. The two shows would make a good pairing, if you could get around the huge difference in runtime.

My wife is hooked. I've been roped back in. This has become one of our go-to shows when we feel like zoning out on the couch or in bed.”

“One of four feature length movies based on the Futurama universe. This one is probably my least favorite of the four, but the worst Futurama movie is light years better than the best Twilight movie.”
“Starting to get into this. It's easy to watch, and it's really starting to develop.”
“I absolutely love Futurama. It just reminds me of when I was little. Its so funny..way better then Family Guy now.”

“I have seriously been missing out on some fantastic television. I always wrote this show off, without even watching it. That was, until last night... I'm in love.”

“OMG this was awesome. I love Cthulhu and tentacle humor is a riot to me. I was laughing my proverbial butt off watching this. Expect tons of innuendo as our entire universe is willingly tentacle mind-raped at the same time by the next universe over. I love Futurama and this is no exception, dirty humor abounds.”
“Never liked this show...”

“My favorite show. It's a good, funny cartoon, but it's not for kids. If you like the whole time-travelling thing, and you like shows like Family Guy, American Dad!, or The Simpsons, this is a good show to watch. I can watch it all day on Netflix.”

“On volume 4 already! It's really coming together now. After finishing the last season of Breaking Bad it's nice to 'relax' and not be pacing around the house screaming at Jesse for screwing something up. This show is comfort food.”

“Another awesome ep. Good on Donovan for helping out.”
“A funny show, where Fry the main character from the 20th century suddenly finds himself in the year 3000. It's from the same creators you brought you the Simpsons, so you can kind of guess what kind of humor it is.”
“total awesomeness”
“love this series no doubt about it”
