chrismolnar wow, i didn't even know about the animated series!

fnoo This was actually my introduction to Star Trek; they used to air on Nickelodeon back in the 1980s. It's not just the original case (minus Walter Koenig); the cartoon has many of the same writers, and is actually the only incarnation of the series to win a major Emmy. It's really solid stuff, and as limited as the animation is, the conceptual freedom that it provides allows the show to explore some more complex and advanced concepts than the live-action series.

fnoo Around the time that TNG came around, Roddenberry's lawyers decided to whittle down licensees with the object to exert strict control on everything with the Star Trek name. As a side effect, possibly because Filmation couldn't afford the negotiated license or because they were entering an ambiguous phase of ownership, TAS was decanonized and it was ordered that no one ever refer to it again.

fnoo After Roddenberry died, writers began to make less and less obscure references to the show. Finally a couple of years ago, the people in charge of such things shrugged and allowed the show back into the fold.

So, yeah. These are the fourth and fifth years of the Enterprise's five-year mission.
