“A modern remake of the classic Karate Kid, but in itself a movie of its own. I love Jaden's role in the movie and how much he is a spitting image of his father when it comes to his Charisma on screen, The Smiths are surely a blessed lot. And i look forward to him starring in movies where he is by himself like I Am Legend. But I digress.
The movie has a predictable plot I must agree but the execution of it was superb. Being shot on location added authenticity to the scenes and made one feel like indeed Dre (Jaden Smith) was actually a fish out of the water in that new world saturated with Kung Fu skill wielding folks. With Dre's remarks "It's China mom. Everyone knows Kung Fu" summing it up in the best way possible. lol I guess what sold it to me most was the fact that could relate to the struggle of having to adjust to a new town and new everything leave alone having to have a bully who can beat you and your whole family... uncles, aunts cousins nephews and nieces included without getting a scratch on his Asian skin... lol
All in all. A mighty great watch for the kids and the young at heart.”
“Oh man did I regret this one. If I wanted to see a black kid beat up a bunch of Asians I'd just go to the tenderloin.”
“I rather enjoyed this! It works in its own right, aside from the epic classicness of Mr. Miyagi and Daniel-san. And surprisingly, Will Smith's kid can act! I feared the worst, since Mr. Jackie Chan has been doing his best to tarnish his own legacy of classic movies recently but I'm pleased with his performance in this as well! I'm so relieved I like this :)”
“This movie was ok...a bit longer than i expected and the stupid little asian kid that kept punking Jaden Smith pissed me off cause it was a dick for no good reason. WTF was his problem!?
Jaden's a good actor. They did change a few things but it's basically a remake of the original.
It's worth watching once.”
“I loved this movie. J. Smith is a very good actor for his age.”
“Pretty good movie. 3 out of 5 stars.”
“Um, wackness. I had protested this movie for the longest and my sister wanted to watch it so I obliged. I guess the only dope thing would be that he got to train with Jackie Chan. But that's about it...”
“LOVED this movie. even though parts are different from the original you can link the differences, it was an awesome movie !”
“Yes, I did watch this haha :P it's good to watch when your mega bored”
“This was a good movie. I liked how it's not a remake of the old Karate Kid. Jackie Chan did awesome and so did Will Smith's kid ... who I can't remember his name. lol.”
“hurray for Smith's debut but boo for this poorly executed retelling.”
“Worth of the Karate Kid name. I thought this movie was really entertaining.”
“it wasn't as bad as I expected,
I felt it did a pretty good job.
my main problem is that he didn't learn karate,
he learned Kung Fu,
this movie should have been called the Kung Ku Kid.”
“Ok, I'll give you that the kid is cute AND he can act AND his parents are cool... I still like the original better. How can you beat "wax on, wax off???"”
“Should've been called The Kung Fu Kid but that's not important.
kind of boring but somewhat entertaining if there's absolutely nothing else on.
i give this a very very weak "maybe"”
“It was an okay movie. The Kung Fu scenes are not as good as I thought it would be. It definitely reminds me a lot of China..... :( so sad, I miss home. But, it makes China look so old. Man, seriously, people, China does not look like that, especially Beijing. Anyway, I still liked it.”
“"The Karate Kid" is one of those really bizarre remakes that really works. The thought of remaking something so clearly placed in 80's culture just comes off as a forced attempt to rake in some cash, especially when you place a Smith kid and Jackie Chan in the roles originated by Macchio and Morita.
But oddly enough, this updating is just fresh enough, with it's new setting in China and rearranged character traits to make it a worthwhile experience, even if the stories remain extraordinarily similar. Jackie Chan actually puts a lot of heart into his performance, as does the incredibly likable Jaden Smith who's delivered an undoubtedly star-making performance. Not only is this not a cash hungry rehash of a classic tale, but it's actually managed to mold an identity of it's own, one which I can honestly say I enjoy over the first.
If you've been turned off by the prospect of a contemporary retelling, do yourself a favor and give it a go. It's in no way a perfect film, but it's certainly one well worth the viewing.”
