“While this show doesn't hold a candle to the sophistication, skill and moderate drama of Top Chef, Just Desserts is pretty much summed up by it's title, and is pretty enjoyable.
This is all sugar, empty calories... reality TV junk food. You will immediately notice that pastry chefs are dramatic. A better word is insane. Or super insane. The production values are pretty high, but it's obvious they are recycling and riffing with whatever gets put in the Top Chef storage room when not in season. Younger sister playing dress up in older sisters clothes. Gail is not the host Padma is, but she's certainly serviceable. Johnny doesn't wear the head judge crown as well as Tom. But the formula is Top Chef through and through, it's just a little bit rowdier and less polished and more focused on cliques and squabbles.
Guilty pleasure, for sure. I will watch the next season, if anything, just to see if anyone could ever out do Seth's emotional breakdown during a quick fire.
Hugging a world renown pastry chef, bawling your eyes out and saying "The red hots are for my Mommy" is just, well... a divine thing to witness.”
