Not near as funny as I thought it was gonna be. Very predictable.

Do you really watch a romantic comedy with the expectation of being surprised? The whole genre is about variations of a theme. If the banter is sufficiently cute and clever, and they manage to avoid the obvious solution to every scene, you get pretty much what you're bargaining for. If you want to be startled, there are better tools for that.

Fair enough. I'm just saying that it makes some sense to approach these things with a sliding scale. Roger Ebert will give full scores to trash that does everything it sets out to do, and half marks to artful movies that miss the mark in some fundamental way. On on absolute scale the latter movies are probably better cinema, but it makes the most sense to match expectations to the ambitions at play.
