Obviously Guitar Hero started the instrument craze in America (Guitar Freaks and all of the Beatmani games were huge in Japan and fell over into a couple American arcades for a while before Guitar Hero showed up). I liked the first couple games as the concept was new enough that you could find friends to play with you. The 3rd version of GH started looking long in the tooth, which is around the time Rock Band showed up. RockBand has a perception of constantly innovating.

I now own all three versions and can see the changes in between them all. It's an excellent party game that everyone, no matter what skill level, gets to play and have a good time. Guitar Hero seems to be catering to the hardcore guitar players. With the new support for real instruments on RB3, I'm seriously considering learning to play a real instrument. So, to sum up this long winded explanation, RB far surpasses guitar hero on originality and fun. Best music game out there, hands down.

Basically, Harmonix -- they're the dudes who created Guitar Hero. After the second game they sold the franchise on and left to do Rock Band. So that would explain a few things.
