Zombieland
Probably one of my favorite Zombie films.
· movie from Netflix
lesayoh i could never get tired of zombie comedies. i dont know why
girlfriday Ohh 28 Days later has that bizarre opening! So creepy!
beverlynoelle Shaun of the Dead is my number one, but Zombieland is making a little Woody Harrelson-sized space in my heart!
gkruis 28 Days Later is amazing. I'd probably put that on top of my list, but I need to see some of the classics, which I haven't done yet unfortunately.
Katrinafaye Come on people! REsident Evil anyone? It may be corny but thats whats awesome!
gkruis Totally in for the RE. I've only seen the first one, but I think it's a great Zombie flick. I love that they didn't use CGI Zombies, but the Zombies were all real people with make-up.
Inglourious Basterds
Great, but definitely for a mature audience. It can be a bit slow at parts as well.
· movie from Netflix
gkruis Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves, &c. are all examples of movies 'like' Avatar, but Avatar maximizes those genres and eschews many of the quandaries with making movies like that by creating a new world, and a truly magical race of creatures. It's not just goofy shamanism, it's completely different planet in which those things are possible. By creating the best film in that genre, any complaint about Fern Gully and LotM or DwW should be forgotten in time.
lala412 @gkruis - true, and Avatar was definitely the most beautiful of the "like" movies. And I did enjoy it. I just thought that the plot followed the plot of Fern Gully so exactly that it ended up hurting Avatar to those who had seen FG and actually remembered it. But yes, a lot of movies are "like" others. Nothing new under the sun. :-)
Katrinafaye To be honest I've neer really seen any of Quinton Tarrantinos work before now. Avatar was over hyped I think. There were definitely some way better movies that came out lat year. Without the publicity of it all Avatar wouldn't be nearly as talked about as it is.
gkruis In this instance I think it is precisely the publicity and popularity that make it such a great film. That Cameron is willing to forgo pretension in order to create such a thoroughgoing popular film. One in which a complete world is created by using the huge amounts of technology afforded him but in subtle and complex ways. To have the tact to use 3D in mostly unobtrusive ways. It's an impressive feat and one that few directors have the bravery to face with any kind of integrity.
gkruis Unlike Jerry "Tits-on-fire" Bruckheimer and his crony Michael "Cock-for-a-Camera" Bay, Cameron makes huge movies but he makes them with emotion and affords the same wide audience a movie made with intelligence. Unlike with Tarantino, you don't have to have a sharp sense of irony, which is simply a la mode. In a way, by telling such an archetypal story Avatar transcends simple comparison to other movies of its genre or type, becoming the paragon of that type.
gkruis As to FG, Shakespeare himself ripped entire plots from most of his source material. He just did it damned well, and we forget the forebears. Aside from cultural context, the central metaphor of the 'avatar' is profound. The significance runs throughout the film, from the Mech robots and Helicopters the army so adroitly employs, to the cloned bodies of the Na'avi, their horses, and flying dragons, to the camera Cameron used, and the way he took over your world and immersed you in his.

Glee - Never Been Kissed
One of the better episodes this season. Why did everyone begin to love Glee? Because the first season rocked! Sadly this second season is kinda a dud. Every episode is either promoting some artist (Brittany Spears, Gwyneth Paltrow, etc.) or it's taking a political position on controversial topics just to get people riled up; this increasing their views. I love the show but I just wish they would go back to the characters and the music!
