I've never seen Bakshi's stuff. I'd like to check out Fritz the Cat. I dig Crumb, but I heard he wasn't too pleased with Bakshi's rendition.

Thanks for tracking down the Kaufman script. I'm definitely gonna read it.

If you're going to see one Bakshi movie, it probably makes sense to check out his version of Lord of the Rings. My rationale is that you already know the story, and have seen Jackson's pretty successful adaptation. This gives you more leeway to wonder at Bakshi's... distinctive animation and directorial style.

Hard to say. Stranger Than Paradise or Down By Law. No I haven't seen Fishing with John. Maybe I'll check it out.

'Down by Law' is my favorite, for sure. Tom Waits! Roberto Benigni! John Lurie! The casting is amazing. 'Fishing with John' is fun. It's a TV show starring John Lurie funded by Japanese businessmen. John and a special guest (Jarmusch, Waits, Hopper, Dillon, DeFoe, &c.) go fishing together somewhere in the world. The narration is hilarious. It's definitely an oddity, but worth it if you can find it.

It's directed by Charles Laughton, and stars Robert Mitchum in a bad-guy role. Although it bombed at the time and ruined Laughton's career, the movie has been hugely influential on later directors. Every Coen Brothers movie references the film. You've probably seen the business with "LOVE" and "HATE" tattooed on a character's knuckles; that comes from here (sometimes via Spike Lee). Some of the shots, like the underwater stuff, took years for anyone to figure out how Laughton pulled them off.

I assume you've seen all the weird controversy over the US version, with everyone up in arms about whether it qualifies as child porn. The weird thing is that it's almost a shot-for-shot remake of the UK version, except with all the language, violence, and sexuality significantly toned down. And in the UK, which if anything is more hard-line about child porn and pedophilia, no one really blinks twice at the show. There's an interesting article on the topic here:

There's a US version now, huh? It figures that the US would make a big deal about it--our touchy subject in movies and stuff is sex, whereas in Europe it's violence. What's the difference between the two versions?
alexxx187
Yes I have. It's pretty awful. Those "actors" need to get some lessons. They make the people on Gossip Girl look like Marlon Brando.
MizzBlaze
Lol. The 2nd episode of the US version was slightly better thanks to that Tea girl. She seems like the only one who can act

This is the thing I hate about America is that you get something like this on tv and people get upset and start groups trying to ban things that are out there. I have not seen this show but I have heard that the American version sucks.

So do you think Banksy is the real Mr. Brainwash?
dive_philospher
i love documentaries. what is this one about?
bestfriend@semtexgirl What do you think? I think that he's like, behind the thing but he isn't actually him? I saw mr brainwash walking around soho a few times? the whole thing has left me puzzled?
SemtexGirl
I think Banksy is the puppeteer. Mr. Brainwash probably did make the art (because it's not exactly Georges Seurat shit we're talking about), but it's in Banksy's nature to fuck with people from behind the scenes.

Just. Watched. It. Funny, silly, and quite creative.
