Date Night
You probably have to be a Steve Carrell and Tina Fey fan to see this. Although I'm not much of a Carrell fan, I do enjoy Tina. I did enjoy this one, but keep in mind, it doesn't take a lot of brain power to enjoy it.
· movie from Netflix
saunieindiego I had high hopes but, It was kinda slow and predictable.
The Hurt Locker
I don't usually enjoy war movies, but I thought I would give this a try after enjoying "Black Hawk Down". I was very surprised at how much this one entertained me. That last scene in the grocery store, with the miles of cereal boxes, had quite an impact.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
First, I hate reading movies. I had hoped it had audio choices but, no. I know the books are wildly popular and I haven't read one yet, so thought I'd try the movie first. It was OK but I hope the books are better.
The Tourist
Ricky Gervais asked at an award show, "Who actually saw 'The Tourist'?" and I agree. How did this script attract these two stars - with a free trip to Venice? The only thing this movie had over "Duplicity" (which I also hated) is better wardrobe and makeup.
amaialife and it wasnt all that good either - just good actors.
Made in Dagenham
Recommended by one of my daughters, this movie of gender equality in the workplace was very, very good. Great cast, too. Watching the main female character come into her own was fascinating.
· movie from Netflix
Friends with Money
This was just one of those I-have-nothing-else-to-do movies and it fit the bill. It was OK for a 'group of friends' movie but nothing outstanding. As a matter of fact, I think I've seen it before which says something about how memorable it was.
The King's Speech
I loved this movie! I usually don't think so highly of movies recognized by the Academy Awards, for some reason, but I was totally entertained by this one. Geoffrey Rush is a STAR!
· movie from Netflix
Hot Tub Time Machine
This was one of the worst movies I have seen in my life. I picked it up because John Cusak is in it, but even that wasn't enough. When the youngest male actor has the best part in a buddy movie (which I expected to have some juvenile humor), that says something about where this rates on my scale. My daughter warned me not to watch this but I had to see for myself. I've said this before: there's time I'll never get back. What a waste!
· movie from Netflix
Resident Evil: Afterlife
My son asked me to rent this as we watched the others in this series. He was very disappointed. The action was all at the beginning and the end; obviously, that's not enough for the gamer in him. The "no" rating comes from him.
· movie from Netflix
beverlynoelle I heard it's really bad :( The first one was the only good one!
fnoo I'm not sure that the original is much of a masterpiece either, but it certainly seems to have gotten a better critical response than the sequels.

But hey, you can work it out here: http://blippy.com/a-ranking-of-videogame-movies
The Switch
Instead of getting up on a weekend morning, I put this movie in. It was perfect for that purpose. Of course, the plot is predictable. Of course, you'll figure out what's what at the beginning. But, it's the getting there that's enjoyable. I enjoy Jason Bateman in everything I've seen him in (he can play a somewhat dramatic comedic role so well). The young boy was amazing for his 6 years! Watching the little guy and Jason portray matching neurotics at different ages made me laugh out loud. The supporting actors, Jeff Goldblum and Juliette Lewis, filled their roles so well; I admired how much each character was allowed to develop in such a short film. If you like comedies with a bit of romance thrown in, this is a good movie to fit that bill.
· movie from Netflix
gkruis Goldblum is worth a watch anytime.
girlfriday They should put GOLDBLUM in everything for instant greatness.
gkruis Goldblum stamp of approval.
Sherlock Holmes
I enjoyed the camaraderie of the two leading actors. I've enjoyed them individually and was happy to see how well they acted together. A couple of parts I didn't enjoy about this movie: the presentation of each fight scene in slow motion, and then in real time; I didn't need to see it twice and thought the slow-motion version was enough. I used to watch the original Sherlock Holmes movies and don't recall that much fighting! Sherlock was a crime solver using his brain!
· movie from Netflix
fnoo That also works.

If you've any kind of a broader yen or curiosity for Holmes, the best you can do is probably Granada's TV adaptation starring Jeremy Brett (linked above). It's about as faithful an interpretation of Doyle's writing as possible, and in many cases is actually superior -- inasmuch as Doyle had an abysmal grasp of style and story structure. It's probably the first time that Holmes' and Watson's relationship was depicted as actually written.
fnoo Ah! They're all streaming on Netflix. The sequence is:

Adventures
Return
Casebook
Memoirs

The movies (Sign of Four/Hound of the Baskervilles/Master Blackmailer/Last Vampyre/Eligible Bachelor) all slot in there somewhere amongst Return and Casebook. The specific order isn't so important.
amyuhrich Thanks for the suggestion! Will keep all that in mind. Maybe I can get the boyfriend to watch it with me; he's more familiar with SH than I am.
fnoo It's truly good stuff. My wife has become sort of enamored with Brett's performance. It killed him, you know. The role drove him mad, and the complications of the medication slowly ate away at his body.

amyuhrich That sounds...gruesome. I'm loving the clip, though.
Blood Simple
Frances McDormand's "big screen debut"! The twists and subplots in this movie kept me entertained all the way through.
· movie from Netflix
chrismolnar i still gotta see this coen bros. movie. can't wait.
impulsebuyer What is the general premise of this movie?
bestfriend I feel like this is one of those coen movies everyone forgets about
cfidgeon General premise: husband suspects wife of cheating & hires PI to follow her. When confirmed, husband hires PI to kill wife & lover. Husband ends up nearly dead; lover suspects wife & does what needs to be done to cover for her. I can say no more. I highly recommend it!
gkruis @chrismolnar count me in. i haven't watched it yet either.
fnoo It just constantly gets more intense as it goes along. The final scene is a classic that should have gone down in history like the shower scene in Psycho. This movie needs more exposure.
The Maiden Heist
Very enjoyable and full of some of my most favorite actors. Yes, they are breaking the law but watching how they fumble through it is hilarious. You'll remember "Roger" and watching William H. Macy relate to the statue forever.
beverlynoelle I loved this! The actors are amazing, and Morgan Freeman was so understated...
productjoy oooh this movie sounds promising! do you know if it's playing through instant stream?
cfidgeon That's how we watched it -- well, through the Wii
The Town
I read once there are 8 plots in Hollywood. This is one of them.
· movie from Netflix
Smother
I enjoy Diane Keaton and she is what kept me watching this movie until the end. The plot was predictable but she was great, although a bit over the top, even for her!
· movie from Netflix
Scanners
I watched this as a result of a review by someone I do not know, which emphasized the "exploding head" and claimed it was the "scariest sci fi movie they had seen". There was an exploding head but not sure I agree with the 2nd part. One of those "monster" movies; fairly predictable, but OK.

lesayoh the opening scene is so awesome. and scary
Spring Breakdown
Recommended by my 25-year-old daughter. It was more enjoyable than I expected. Probably good for a snowed in or rainy day.
· movie from Netflix
Party Girl
A movie recommended by my 25 year old library science graduate student daughter. I enjoyed watching it with her; it has its moments.
lesayoh its so 90's and awesome
The Dark Knight
I did not find this as enjoyable as "Batman Begins", maybe because of the hype around Heath Ledger. It will probably be a bigger hit among those who live for the Batman series.

gkruis An amazing job. And the plot of this one was so taut it made me forget they were freaks in masks and this is a comic book. It was so low on the cheese quotient that it wasn't even a superhero movie. Definitely a feat.
lesayoh heath was too good. he made everybody else mediocre
gkruis no way. bale does a great job too. and i thought eckhart played two face really well. he did outshine them all, though.
fnoo Bale's Batman voice kind of makes it hard to take his character seriously. It's like he began a comedy routine then got distracted.
gkruis I'd be inclined to agree because I felt distate for his growl in the first one, but I kind of like how fear and that bizarre growl are a part of Batman's persona of fear and intimidation. It also helps contrast the Bruce as Bateman/Batman dichotomy, if you know what I mean.
Batman Begins
I wanted to watch Dark Knight and found out it's a sequel to this. Surprise on me, I did enjoy this movie, and it kept me entertained. Some of the scenes are shot too much in the dark; I like to see what I'm watching; but that's Gotham City for you, I imagine, where the bad things always happen at night.

beverlynoelle I personally thought Scarecrow was creepier as the doctor than in costume :D
aaronjonz ya i really liked this movie i think it is over looked way to often because its was just a stepping stone to the dark knight but i still think together its ever bit as good!
MizzBlaze @beverlynoelle That's cuz Cillian Murphy is just creepy looking
