The Rape of Europa
This is a stunning movie. It chronicles the fate of the most important art in Europe during the course of World War II. Hitler, a failed artist, and his highest officers were all art "collectors" -- which is to say that they stole the most important art in the world for their own purposes. In an effort to protect the important pieces in Paris's Louvre and Russia's Hermitage, both museums were evacuated during WWII and sent into the countryside. It is stunning the efforts made to protect the art during this horrible war but, in many instances to no avail -- 50 Million people died and thousands of the greatest pieces of art were lost. It is a great reminder of the immense inhumanity and horror of WWII.
