Werner Herzog: Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3D!!!
Werner Herzog put out a documentary about the Cave of Chauvet, which has human art from over 50,000 years ago. Some beautiful photography and interesting interviews. The overall effect of the 3D was good, though there were times in which it was unnecessary; being as you can turn the 3D off, I wish Herzog would have done it some times. My only other problem with the documentary is that they insinuate that no one may ever film in these caves again. Don't get me wrong, Herzog is amazing, but if this is the only filmic document out there of this amazing place, I'll be a little disappointed. Herzog's personality dominates the inquiry and it isn't as fact based as I would like. Herzog is endearing, clever, and spiritual in a way that few other filmmakers are, but I would like to get a less lyrical look at the cave as well. Attenborough would do just fine.

gkruis I think that the 3D was great and very metaphorically on point; it just could have been turned off for certain scenes. It makes me feel like Herzog just didn't care enough to make those decisions. Which is probably true. He's got a singular focus and that often means other things fall by the wayside. I think he even likes the imperfections.
gkruis @girlfriday in this case the subject matter is way more interesting than Herzog; or, in a sense Herzog is made a part of how interesting the caves are. One of the themes of the movie is how one horse on the cave wall is 5,000 years older than another which looks identical; thus, the artist is not a single person but a people group. Herzog is just a part of this continuum.
gkruis The 3D serves the purpose of showing how in parallax the cave walls create a kind of proto-cinema, especially dancing in the light of torches. In my opinion it also demonstrates the impermanence of the people filming and being filmed, which is significant in the face of such an ancient display of human art.
gkruis Or, the art that first made us truly human.
saunieindiego This sounds right up my alley, I wonder if it will come to San Diego?
gkruis Keep an eye out for it. It was playing in a lot of places in NYC. It's great. 3D is great for the cave scenes. Really brings you right inside.

15 bux for 30 bux worth of loose tea from a store in Manhattan. I've got plenty of puerh, oolong, and black, but I'm running out of green. I drink a lot of tea. This deal was like providence to my poor ass.

Preferred Dental Care: Exam, Cleaning, and X-Rays
I got my teeth cleaned and an exam for 50 bones!

Then I found out I have an impacted wisdom tooth, I need an extraction, root canal, and a tooth reconstructed... for 3,550 bones. I will be poor for the rest of my life.

But I guess it's better than being poor and jawless.

chrismolnar 3550 new bones, all for one faulty bone? sounds like a raw deal to me. at least you'll get some swell painkillers.
gkruis Here's hoping.
impulsebuyer It might be different in your case, but I've heard that some dentists pressure patients into getting wisdom teeth pulled when it might not be necessary. I have a deep mistrust of dentists :/
gkruis @impulsebuyer this is something my friends said to me last night; I'm inclined to get the tooth out and not go through with the others. @robinhudd thanks, that comment really helps me feel better about my impending poverty. @heiditron hurt? no. which is weird because I do have a chipped molar that they said was probably caused by the pressure applied by my impacted tooth - a hammer and chisel type of thing.
gkruis Maybe I can get them to take my dogtooth out; then I'll be free of my tyrannical home-schooling parents.

gkruis Smart idea! I'll definitely check it out. Thanks.
Damien Jurado and John Vanderslice Live
My friends and are are going to a John Vanderslice and Damien Jurado show at the Mercury Lounge. Damien Jurado is one of my all-time favorite singer-songwriters and Vanderslice has some killer songs. Here's a video for Jurado's "Caskets," be warned, it's intense: http://bit.ly/151N8b

And here's a video of the first and only time I saw Jurado 6 years ago: http://bit.ly/1u8SQz

And finally here is my favorite song by the Slice: http://bit.ly/9JhEch

*************

Update: Went to the show last night and Damien Jurado blew my mind. The last song he played was entirely captivating, intense, and beautiful. I don't think that it's on any of his albums, but I would pay the whole price just to see him do that song again.

Vanderslice is such a personable entertainer that it's impossible not to love him. It was just him and a drummer for most of the show, but the drummer was incredible. He played synth and glockenspiel while keeping a strong beat on the kit. Watching him get a full band sound between the two of them was definitely a highlight. Vanderslice also invited several friends up on stage to play with him, including a Jurado for the last few songs, which they played from the middle of the crowd. This was a perfect way to end such an intimate show; rather than the normal bullshit performance of going off-stage and coming out for an encore, Jurado and Vanderslice led a sing-along, so when the lights went down they were right there in the middle of everyone dancing when the house music played.

Probably the best show I've seen in NYC so far - and that's up against Blonde Redhead, Josh Ritter, Sufjan Stevens, TV on the Radio, and Bob Dylan, to name a few.

Clarks Desert Boots Beeswax Leather
I've been looking into buying a pair of boots for a while and I've always really liked the look of Clarks Desert Boots. They came in a few days ago and I am pleased as all get out by them. I was surprised at how immediately comfortable they were. I prefer a shoe you can just slip on and go, and these are perfect for that. They have an open mouth, but are snug, and they look good enough that I can wear them to almost anything. Highly recommended.

gkruis Thanks. They are! A few weeks in and I'm a happy camper.
amyuhrich Very nice. Whats the deal with a beeswax sole?
gkruis I'm not sure about the beeswax sole, but these are beeswax leather, which is used for waterproofing. & yes, if you're in a pinch, you can eat them.
amyuhrich Ah, that makes sense. I think maybe I thought (really? okay) they were suede from the photo, but I can't see it anymore. Are they suede or smooth?
gkruis Smoove.

saunieindiego Is it 65 dollars for a LICENSE?? Wow!
gkruis Is that a lot? I think NMs is like 50.
chrismolnar it makes me so proud every time i look at mine. NYC for life. the coney island DMV had a short line, and plus it's coney island!
gkruis I went to Brooklyn, Atlantic Terminal. Jeezuss that took 4 hours!
amyuhrich Congratulations! I have a no-state driver's license. But that's okay, because I still got to wait in line for 3 hours for a state ID card.
gkruis Thanks. I rarely drive, but it's nice to have the capability if I need to. I was holding out, but that instate tuition is impossible to pass up.
Innisfree Poetry Cafe Boulder
One of three all-poetry bookstores in America. Another win for Boulder! They have two weekly readings and are expanding, adding a reservable table for study groups and book clubs. I spent two days working here, reading poetry, and drinking tea. I'd highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area. The room is filled with natural light and on either side the walls are stacked with books. Better than most cafes, in my opinion. The service is good, the folks are friendly, and the store itself is beautiful. I bought a book of Ancient Indian poetry called, "Dropping the Bow," translated by Andrew Schelling and I love it. A lot of it is pretty steamy poetry about the love life of villagers, but it's all very atmospheric and imagistic. Here's a less spicy taste from the book:

Rain slants steadily
through the night-bound
toddy-palm forest.
Concealed by huge fronds
the elephants,
eyes half-open,
trunks slung over their tusk-tips,
listen to the unbroken
downpour.

-Hastipaka

Needless to say, both the book and the cafe come at the highest recommendation.

gkruis NYC & Asia are the 2 places to go for it, I think. Maybe London, Paris, or something, too.
porcupiny It would be cheaper to go to NYC than Asia, London or Paris. He said he would order stuff from them online if he could.
gkruis I keep thought they had an online store! Guess not. That's too bad. Well, the clothes aren't so awesome they merit a trip, but if you're in town, that store is pretty crazy. How'd he shop there before?
porcupiny He's never shopped their, he had seen their website and was using their free screen saver. I did find some things for him on ebay, but he had never gotten any of their clothes before.
chrismolnar most of their clothes are far too shiny and fake trendy/japanese for me, but @gkruis makes a strong case for their undies.
gkruis & socks!

Boulder Greens
I was in Colorado a few weeks back and they are obsessed with marijuana there. This was just a salad and wrap joint, but they still had to pun with the pot references. The menu and the art. It's a little cheesy, but if you have reservations about medical marijuana or pot decriminalization, go to Boulder. It's a bizarro utopia in which weed is semi-legal and everyone is super, super friendly. Plus there are beautiful mountains nearby and a lot of great beers on their taps.

fnoo I was hoping it was something like that -- fundamental gestures first, which are combined into specific characters. Neato!
amyuhrich What about speed? I write fairly neatly but I notice when I try to make my writing even neater, I just end up going really, really slow. Which just makes me go back to my quick, semi-tidy scrawl.
gkruis Any attempt at speed before came at a huge decrease in legibility, so if I'm slower now it's still worth it. I don't think their is much of a difference in speed, though. If anything this teaches fluidity, which should increase speed over time.
amyuhrich Sounds good to me. Now I wish I was a messy writer just so I could try it. I don't imagine it would do me much good.
gkruis Nope. Probably not. Plus, its not that fun...
amyuhrich Self-improvement is kind of hit and miss in terms of "fun."
