The End of Poverty?
Awesomely detailed and insightful documentary putting the global dynamics of poverty into a historical context. I already agreed with the film's perspective--colonialism has had a prolonged effect on the global economy, trade and our current capitalist structure--but I decided to watch it to gain some knowledge on facts and figures.
The film turned out to be much more than facts and figures, though; it did a great job of incorporating personal accounts from laborers in some of the most impoverished countries. Their words were grave, heart-wrenching, but somewhat resigned; it made me realize how systemic poverty is, and how unattainable a better standard of living may seem to some individuals.
Although it largely focused on documenting poverty in South and Central America and Africa, the diversity of those interviewed was noteworthy. Expats, indigenous peoples, those of lower SES, and doctoral experts were all included as participants.
If you ever were curious about colonialism's effects on modern society, I'd highly recommend giving this film a try.
