The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
Love love LOVED this trilogy. Superb characters all around. I'd say the only person I could be annoyed at was Mikael Blomkvist for being stupidly confident and somewhat oblivious in some scenes. Who knew there could be agents conspiring so ruthlessly against one woman? I kept watching because it was interesting to observe the characters on a psychological scale; the guns and gore only added to the thrill.
Priest
Watch this movie for the effects and for the action, not for the plot. All characters other than the main were a bit underdeveloped and the ending left you hanging. I'm assuming they were planning a sequel, but this movie didn't fare too well at the box office. I wish they would make one though; these vampires looked awesome.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
The Underworld series is Twilight gone bad, in a good way. Love these movies. I'd prefer to watch vampires and lycans face each other in an epic feud over a teen romance. That's just my taste, though. There were more than enough conflict, secrets and war-torn love to keep my eyes glued.
Daybreakers
Not your typical vampire movie; there are some very interesting twists here. It's even cooler that the movie is set in the future and the majority of the population on Earth are vampires. Hefty amounts of action and a good share of moral dilemmas.
Eli Stone
I thought I wouldn't like this TV show; most of the cast looks douchey and/or weird, except for Loretta Devine--she's amazing.

After watching three episodes though, I think I've found a new TV show. The story concept is quirky and each episode has elements of conflict, wit, and moments that pull at your heartstrings.

Eli Stone gets + points for being created by Greg Berlanti, producer/writer of Brothers & Sisters. After learning that Brothers & Sisters wasn't picked up for another season, Eli Stone is a pretty good replacement.

Sweet Land
This film is a definite recommend; it's subtle, intelligent, heartwarming and funny. It portrayed the life of a mail-order bride from Norway, revealed to actually be German, who heads to rural Minnesota in the post-WWI era.

The German is not translated, and couldn't be, since some of it is constructed.

I love the film for the subtlety and silence in its scenes; it allowed me to better appreciate the development of the characters' relationships. Plus, Elizabeth Reaser and Tim Guinee are on attractive pair.

Sweet Land suggests that love between two people does not necessarily require speaking the same language; it also makes a point that bonds of friendship, kinship and love are hard to break.
· movie from Netflix
bestfriend this sounds sweet but is it even watchable if i dont speak german?
iherwin Definitely; my command of German is decent at best, and I could still understand the scenes. It tends to focus more on the emotions between the two involved in the relationship than their actual dialogue.
fnoo "Constructed" in what sense?
iherwin @fnoo I thought the German was fake, but there are vocabulary that actually exists. I read a review saying it's a mix of German and Norwegian; so perhaps it's not constructed.
The Ugly Truth
Another typical guy meets girl, girl hates guy, girl and guy fall in love type of romantic comedy.

I love Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, though.

Gerard's character is a dbag, but I acknowledge that he was carrying baggage. I'm also glad Katherine's character stood up for herself.

I suppose there's a lesson to this movie: don't change yourself to fall in love.

I just watched it for a good laugh and to feel warm and fuzzy, though; which is the reason I watch any romantic comedy.

Angels & Demons
Religious conspiracy, a scary, unknown killer, a university professor turned investigator, and lots of special effects make for an amazing film.

Did I say lots of special effects?

That is all.
Metropia
Story: In the future, the corporate world has overtaken government in power and control much of Europe's metro. Mind control exists and consumerism is dominant; although, there are no mind-control rays.

The screenwriters created a clever dystopia where people's thoughts are no longer their own. The characters are great as well--unusual and screwed up; there's no clear heroes or villains in this film.

I wouldn't label the film as suspenseful, since it was very monotone, but the scenes do cover a lot of action.

Animation is superb, but freaky. All the characters have huge eyes; I was staring at them and feeling disturbed, all throughout.
The Man from Earth
I have mixed feelings about this film. The idea and concept is amazing: exploring the possibility of a caveman surviving until the present day through a fireside chat with university professors.

However, I think if I had to rate the credibility/plausibility of the professors and their remarks, the film would probably fail in my eyes. Honestly, what kind of researcher in psychology would legitimately speak of vampires?

The film succeeded in keeping my attention by building up tension, providing much needed breaks, and having me hope for a resolution. I'd suggest watching the film for its interesting idea and the emotional material, not for the discussion content.

Kinamand
Awesome Danish romantic comedy and drama-in-one. The film does not translate the Chinese for you, which gives more power to the emotions, facial expressions and body language.

I'd place this movie with those that focus on (under-)average individuals whose lives sort of suck, but have amazingly interesting stories (think Sunshine Cleaning); this film explores the cultural intersections of Chinese immigrants in Denmark through the lens of a plumber.

Despite the storyline being somewhat eccentric, the characters were fully believable...and hilarious. I found myself laughing throughout most of this film, not because the scenes were outright funny, but because they subtly communicated the irony and ridiculousness of the situation. The ending had a good turn of plot as well.

I'd definitely recommend this film; you get a laugh at the beginning, some sadness near the end, and you finish feeling bittersweet.

Treeless Mountain
I think the Netflix reviews seemed to create a good/evil polarity amongst the characters; they labeled the aunt as a drunkie and the mother as thoughtless and irresponsible. The story however, is more subtle.

This movie is a great narrative about unintended consequences and children left behind; the children aren't purposefully abandoned, but they are victims of stupid decisions made by adults. The ending leaves you hanging, but I think the point of the film was to communicate the sentiments of uncertainty, disillusionment, and perhaps even a sense of helplessness felt by the children. The scenes were not powerfully emotive, which effectively portrayed the nonchalance of the adults; nonetheless, the film was heartbreaking to watch.

Khoa I think I may pick this up!
Khoa I just watched it... It's is pretty heartbreaking ='[

How to instill a simple idea of a piggy bank but then when they figure it out it's all a sham.
iherwin Yeah, that piggy bank really moved the whole story forward; made me angry knowing the mother would never know when it would be filled...or that she thought it would take a long time.
Khoa @iherwin Definitely moving! And at the end the aunt had a little bit compassion after she read the letter.
sumares I saw this recently via Netflix instant streaming (a custom double-feature of the Korean films "Mother" and "Treeless Mountain").

Your review sums up very well the subtleties of this moving film. The children give such an authentic performance!
iherwin @sumares Yeah, I'm so impressed with the children; I dunno if the youngest was acting, but she did a very good job of looking...oblivious?

Great webcam for the price; 1.3 true megapixels with face-tracking technology is relatively amazing, and the best features out of those I saw on Newegg that were under ~$50. Picture is clear and doesn't lag horribly.

The built-in microphone is conflicting with some of my default audio settings, though; I can't seem to switch from the built-in to my headset within my master audio deck. I suppose that's more of a problem with my controls than the webcam, though.

HQRP Battery for Aiptek Action-HD GVS / ActionHD GVS V5Z5S Camcorder Rep...
I purchased this package for the mini tripod. Turns out the tripod is very mini--it's 5" in height; it works well though, if you play around with the flexible legs. Unfortunately, the tripod has horrible paint fumes; I just hope the paint isn't toxic lead-based.

Haven't tried the battery or screen protector yet, but good news is that they don't smell. I'd suggest purchasing other products that have been reviewed more extensively; this package surely wasn't, at least on Amazon. I bought it because it was cheap.
Babies
Dear babies, why do you have to be so adorable?

You know with a documentary titled Babies, it won't fail to be cute; it definitely didn't.

The lack of subtitles made the messages communicated through imagery so much stronger. The juxtaposition of some scenes was brilliant and highlighted some definite comedic contrast; I was laughing hard at some points.

Without using words, this film not only exposed me to cultural differences in child-rearing practices, but also overall differences in lifestyles. I think the lack of words helped to strip each story of bias and prevented viewers from making solid value judgements, in a way. At times, I did find myself judging how some parents carried out certain tasks, but I'd consider it more unpleasant had the scenes been aided with commentary from a traditionally Western perspective.

Everything aside though, I mainly watched this film for the babies; yay babies.

P.S. I think the baby from America has Pagan parents; just a semi-conclusive guess based on one scene, but it would be totally awesome if that were true.

beverlynoelle Seriously, I never even wanted kids til I saw this movie. Damn their adorableness!
iherwin So true; they're especially adorable when they're mischievous. Damn their mischief.
chrismolnar i watched this with my mom... so weird.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
I'm not sure if I understood this movie, aside from the ending.

I think I only watched it for Heath Ledger, R.I.P., and for the CGI effects. Both were amazing, by the way. The actors that were cast to portray Heath Ledger inside the Imaginarium were great as well. I think it was awfully smart and practical of the Director to shoot the parts of the story outside of the Imaginarium, first and foremost.

With that, I still don't get the storyline, particularly the parts inside the Imaginarium. I'd recommend this film for CGI...and Heath Ledger. Go Heath Ledger.

saunieindiego RIP Heath.
Dragonfly
So um...how did this film turn from scary ghost story to sentimental love flick?

I was expecting something supernatural, but sentimental, from the start; however, the soundtrack and camera filtering made it seem more like a supernatural horror film.

At least Kevin Costner's acting was good. The kids though, not so much; but I give them some credit.

+Points for including indigenous South Americans in the film: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yanomami

If you need a time-waster, I suppose this is a decent choice; otherwise, I'd suggest either watching the first few minutes and jumping to the end...or choosing another movie.

The End of Poverty?
Awesomely detailed and insightful documentary putting the global dynamics of poverty into a historical context. I already agreed with the film's perspective--colonialism has had a prolonged effect on the global economy, trade and our current capitalist structure--but I decided to watch it to gain some knowledge on facts and figures.

The film turned out to be much more than facts and figures, though; it did a great job of incorporating personal accounts from laborers in some of the most impoverished countries. Their words were grave, heart-wrenching, but somewhat resigned; it made me realize how systemic poverty is, and how unattainable a better standard of living may seem to some individuals.

Although it largely focused on documenting poverty in South and Central America and Africa, the diversity of those interviewed was noteworthy. Expats, indigenous peoples, those of lower SES, and doctoral experts were all included as participants.

If you ever were curious about colonialism's effects on modern society, I'd highly recommend giving this film a try.

WIRELESS AP TRENDNET|TEW-638APB R
I purchased this to act as a wireless repeater; my router's range wasn't reaching the other end of the house. I had to return it, since it did not extend my range; I think it was more a problem of interference by other signals though--there's about five routers spanned across three houses, somehow...and probably other things.

So far, I'm liking TRENDNet's products. The setup is simple if you know terminology...or can Google it. This AP also works fine with a Wireless Distribution System. My router, also TRENDNet, is easy to configure for this; just plug in a MAC address and WDS is enabled.

The prices for this AP and the router aren't bad, either; I'd say both are mid-tier for quality and features, but they still work great.
