Gowalla is more game like AFAIK. For checking in at some places you can get items, that you can leave at other places and exchange with people who left them before... I guess you can use both. Foursquare has prepopulated it's map with places for you to check in... in Gowalla EVERYTHING is user created.

"Places" is basically a way for Facebook to not stay behind in the Location-sharing war that Foursquare and Gowalla, the pioneers, started. Both are infinitely better than what Facebook has cooked and even communicate through Places.
