The Girl Who Played With Fire
Not quite as fresh and captivating as its predecessor in the trilogy, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, this outing is still a great pleasure. For fans of the books I think that the unfamiliar, Swedish actors will be a far better fit in the roles than the US stars that would have been chosen were this made by Hollywood. The eponymous girl who played with fire is, as played by Noomi Rapace is particularly strong. I am a little nervous about the forthcoming David Fincher version of Dragon Tattoo (with Daniel Craig as Michael Blomquist, no less) because, unlike this Swedish series, I'm almost sure it will feel wrong. Time will tell.

This is the most grueling movie I've ever (partly) seen, with a vivid realistic beating to death and a brutal rape scene. I had to fast forward. The premise is that the events of the movie take place in reverse order (so the killing of a rapist by the victim's current and ex-boyfriends takes place almost at the start). Too gruesome even to relive in a review

Didn't quite have the over-arching story of the best documentaries (think Hoop Dreams) and it was tough to keep the schools and kids straight. But now I want ballroom dancing class for my kids!

Modern Family - My Funky Valentine
Modern Family is something that we've been lacking for a long time - comedy that relies on great writing; well-drawn, closely-observed characters we can all see ourselves in; good acting. What a breath of fresh air. This episode is one of the best.

I think the thing that sets Modern Family apart is its commitment to having an emotional core to the show, as opposed to most other comedy shows out there that, while amazing, tend to be more emotionally detached in their humor. :) This was a great episode.
