Brendan Rankin

Father, husband and incurable geek...in that order.
Time Bandits
Gotta love Terry Gilliam for quirky, imaginative films! This was the first time I'd seen this since I was a child. It didn't disappoint! The Napoleon scenes kill me... Watching this has put me on Gilliam watch. I think I'll watch "Brazil" next.

The Basketball Diaries
Leo at his worst (best?) in a graphic and mostly believable performance around addiction to heroin.
· movie from Netflix
MizzBlaze He's such a great actor
KillTheRabbit45 I watched this at a art house theater when it first came out and was blown away at how good it was.....the funny thing is they wouldn't play it in regular theater's.
Forrest Gump
Great film...truly lives up to the addage, "Be the Best You Can Be!"
· movie from Netflix
The Return of the Pink Panther
The 2nd, 3rd and 4th films are GREAT! Peter Sellers at his best....a true comic genius!
· movie from Netflix
fnoo @slackerman Funny that Strangelove comes off that way, considering that Sellers plays at least half the characters in it.
slackerman @fnoo...no doubt, but Slim Pickens (and others) also had good roles. It's one of my favorite films and Sellers does shine, but...there's more to it.
chrismolnar Okay guys - "Being There" is totally the best Sellers movie.
slackerman @chris...I agree, but it definitely wasn't a comedy or, at least, not as slapstick as most of his better showings.
fnoo Every time I see Being There on a list or a shelf, I think of putting it on. Somehow, after twenty years of noticing it, I've still never gotten around to it.
bestfriend peter sellers is a god
Annie: Special Anniversary Edition
My daughter loves it and I love (in a purely admiring sense) Albert Finney!

The Milk Pail Market
This place rocks!

Less than $30 for a week's worth of fruits and vegetables is fantastic and the quality is much better than what supermarkets provide.

Also, though we didn't buy them this trip, the cheeses are GREAT and the bottled milk is cheaper than Whole Food.
· $26.54 credit card purchase
Tropic Thunder
The trailers were much better than the actual film.
· $4.99 movie from Amazon
fnoo Pretty much. It could have been better if they'd just dialed it down a few notches.
chrismolnar So true!
fnoo I keep wanting to think the movie is funny, but then it gets there first, laughs at itself, and rams the joke down my throat. Which makes it rather a challenge to laugh on my own.
slackerman @fnoo that last comment was spot on! I want to like it, want to find it funny, and then....yeah...you nailed it!
De Anza Cupertino Aqua
Good place in the South Bay to get a shy (timid) kid to not only be "able" to swim, but to actually LIKE it.
· $95 credit card purchase
The Wizard of Oz
An all time classic...in HD, no less! The kids love it! I love it too!
· tv season from Netflix
KillTheRabbit45 You have to watch it with pink floyd's dark side of the moon album....if anyone doesn't know how to do this, you start the album after the third MGM lions roar....it is kinda freaky.
· $3.99 movie from Amazon
girlfriday Indeed. But it's never as funny as I think it's going to be.
The Dark Ages
Interesting film on the importance the Dark Ages played. All I know is that I'm glad I didn't have to live in that time!
· movie from Netflix
Antichrist
Hard to watch beginning....didn't get any easier...and the ending was off the deep end strange.

chrismolnar that first scene is so beautiful... i wonder where the heck he found that terrifying kid.

Vision Therapy for my son with "convergence insufficiency". This has helped him to see better....and to learn better.

Lost
I liked the first season of Lost and decided to watch the final episode. Now, I can see why I stopped watching it...

Secret Yosemite
The climbing was kind of cool, both in the trees and on El Cap', but otherwise this film didn't live up to Nat Geo's high standards.
· movie from Netflix
saunieindiego That's too bad, because that is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. I have been in Feb with snow, and mid summer when it is 80+ degrees.
Truly a beautiful and wonderous place.
Collapse
I hope he's wrong and we're able to shift off of oil more easily than he thinks!
· movie from Netflix
chrismolnar Tell me about it. What's the point of this doomsday stuff? If they're right, it's too late, if they're wrong, who cares?
slackerman Oil is a finite resource, but it's what drives our world economy. Continued economic (and population) growth built on this resource is unsustainable and in Mike Ruppert's opinion, we've already passed the "beginning of the end"... Like I wrote, "I hope he's wrong"! Still, shifting to a new economic paradigm (not involving oil) can't be a bad thing....right? We were dependent on whale oil previous to our discovery of petroleum after all.
CSA: Confederate States of America
What if the South had won the Civil War? Weird....just weird.

The Sweet Hereafter
Interesting movie about social repercussions in a small community following a terrible tragedy.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
I definitely found this one hard to sit through. An obvious vehicle for Nimoy's personal environmental opinions...and not much more.
Denali 115-Piece Home Repair Tool Kit
Great tools in a handy bag...useful.
amyuhrich I like to think I need one of these, but I'd probably only use three things out of the whole box. How's the quality?
slackerman Quality seems OK, but the #1 criterion (for me) is durability. Tools that can't stand the test of time are junk to me.
amyuhrich I guess that's what I meant. You think these will, though?
